A building services apprentice has achieved a college first with an unprecedented 100 per cent in his carpentry exam.

Jon Bishop, aged 25, who is an apprentice with Dudley Council’s building services team recently achieved an incredible 100 per cent distinction in his carpentry exam, the first time the college has had a student achieve this perfect grade in this discipline. 

Jon also had success in a 2013 national competition and has already achieved level 3 in brickwork. He started with the council back in September 2011 and is set to complete his apprenticeship NVQ level 3 in brickwork and NVQ level 2 carpentry this September. Philip Tart, strategic director for resources and transformation, said:

“Our apprenticeship programme is an excellent way for young people to learn a skill, develop their confidence and gain a professional qualification.

“Jon has shown how young people on the programme can push themselves to achieve great results, setting them on the path to a skilled career.”

Dudley Council is recognised as the highest recruiter of apprentices in the Black Country, and currently has over 50 apprentices in various departments on different frameworks. Skills include brickwork, plastering, carpentry, roofing, electrical and plumbing qualifications.
