Thousands of people lined the streets yesterday to cheer on some of the world’s best road cyclists as they raced through the borough for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

A large chunk of the time trial course ran through the borough as cyclists whizzed past crowds in Sedgley, Upper Gornal and Dudley town centre.

The women were first off, leaving West Park in Wolverhampton at 10am. England’s Anna Henderson took the silver medal, and was just pipped by Australia’s Grace Brown to gold. Georgia Williams (New Zealand) won the bronze.

The men’s event started around midday, with Rohan Dennis making it a double gold for Australia. There was another silver for England too, with Fred Wright in second place. Geraint Thomas of Wales picked up the bronze.

The time trials were also screened live on BBC One, with people able to watch the action on the big screen at festival sites in Sedgley and Dudley as well as taking part in a number of other fun family activities. Councillor Sue Greenaway, the Mayor of Dudley, said:

"I was in Dudley town centre to see the event and I have to say it was absolutely amazing to see how many people turned out.

"People of all ages, young, old, families, all together, enjoying the sunshine, cheering, and taking in the once in a lifetime opportunity to see world class athletes doing what they do best in our borough.

"With it being televised as well it has really put our borough on the map and shown we are capable of hosting large scale events."
