The Merry Hill Centre have teamed up with Black Country Type, a photography project led by local artist Tom Hicks, to host an art exhibit this spring showcasing 28 art pieces around the centre.

Tom brings to life the ever-evolving Black Country landscape through photography that captures architectural features, local landmarks and objects.

With all images taken exclusively on a smartphone camera, Tom Hicks is best recognised for his particular focus on words, typography, handmade lettering and signs visible on Black Country streets. 

The exhibit will run from 5th April to 25th June, where you’ll be able to see popular Black Country Type photos captured across Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton displayed right across the centre. You can also view the gallery online by clicking here.

To give you the chance to take a piece of modern Black Country art home, Black Country Type prints will be available for purchase. In collaboration with independent retailer 'Soley Grail Soley Customs', located on the Upper Mall, prints can be bought in store for £22.50. Tom said:

“Merry Hill is a really important part of the community and a main destination for many people in the area. It’s amazing to see it’s position in the region used to help showcase the work of artists and creatives from the Black Country like myself.

“Black Country Type aims to showcase the hidden gems and unique areas across the region that many people who have lived here for years will feel a particular connection to.

“While I traditionally show my art in galleries or online, I’m excited to be able to reach new audiences and connect with even more people through my photos with the help of Merry Hill.”
