As part of Sandwell’s continuing green corridor improvements scheme in Tipton, a community clean-up was undertaken on Tuesday 3 December.

Over 80 volunteers undertook a huge community clean up and the volunteers filled over 300 refuse sacks but also discovered discarded plastic, sofas and even a fridge freezer. Many volunteers had travelled from as far as London, Bristol and Plymouth.

Council bosses issued a huge thank you to the Dakok Support Group and their members who worked tirelessly throughout the morning, working in a positive and professional manner, and making a real difference to the local area and community.

Many residents and dog walkers stopped to thank the group for all the hard work and efforts. 

The Dakok Support Group helps and assists the Kurdish community throughout the UK, supporting individuals with immigration and refugee support.

Arranging volunteering opportunities provides positive experiences for the group and develops skills and knowledge for social and economic integration. This can also improve local communities by being proactive and enriching local diversity in supporting local activities on a regular basis. 

Volunteering helps and assists individuals making new friends, provides a sense of connection to the community and shows commitment in giving something back. 

A spokesperson from the Dakok Support Group, said: “This clean up beautifully highlights the positive impact of this activity and has the potential to inspire others to get involved.

"After counting our members, we’re thrilled to confirm that 80 people participated in this activity—a fantastic turnout that reflects the strong engagement and enthusiasm within our community.

"Working with the community has been such a rewarding experience, and we’d love to continue collaborating on meaningful activities like this in the future.”

Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community, Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, added: “I would like to thank all the volunteers for their hard work in making our borough a more pleasant place to live and visit.

"In particular, I would like to thank all those volunteers from the Dakok Support Group who travelled form further afield to take part. The next clean up will take place in January and I would encourage everyone to get in touch and come along.”
