Children from St Michael’s Church of England School in Tettenhall have received a special commemorative Platinum Jubilee coin to recognise their achievements in learning about the benefits of trees and woodland management.

The school children took up the challenge of The Queen’s Green Canopy Junior Forester Award, created by the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) and w ere especially selected to receive the coins just before the school summer holiday.

They are 237 of 7,000 children who will across the UK receive the collectable and limited edition of a special 50p Jubilee coin. Designed by the esteemed artist, John Bergdahl, the coin depicts The Queen on horseback to reflect Her fondness of nature and mark Her 70 years on the throne.

The Junior Forester Award is part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative that this year sees thousands of trees planted as a legacy of The Queen’s long-serving dedication to the country and its people. The Lord-Lieutenant for the West Midlands, John Crabtree OBE, presented the children with their coins on 20 July at St Michael’s & All Angels Church. He said:

“The Queen’s Green Canopy and this special Junior Forestry Award that encourages young people to appreciate trees and manage them over time is a fantastic initiative, that is an apt celebration of The Queen, while helping to increase our greenery and ensure trees are looked after for generations to come.

"I was delighted to present the coins, which I am sure the children will cherish and remind them of the role they played to help our countryside.”

Over 40,000 children across the UK have signed up to take up the Junior Forestry Award.
