Outdoor chess tables at two borough parks

People can enjoy a game of outdoor chess with new tables that have been installed at Stevens Park in Quarry Bank and Abbey Street Park in Gornal.

The installations, which cost £5,000 in total, were funded through the Levelling Up Parks Fund from central government following a successful grant application from Dudley Council.

The boards are part of a wider UK project, which aims to promote community engagement and mental wellbeing through accessible public chess facilities.

Players are encouraged to bring their own chess pieces, where possible, but sets are also available to borrow from No 92 café at Stevens Park and at Gornal Library on Abbey Street.

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “These boards make a fantastic addition to our parks, offering residents a fresh way to enjoy their visits.

“Chess is a game for all ages and abilities, and these new tables provide a great opportunity for people to come together, enjoy the outdoors, and challenge their minds.”
