"He is currently helping police with their enquiries. At this stage we are not are looking for anyone else and believe the parties were known to each other.

"A forensic post mortem will take place in due course. Police have cordoned off the scene and are carrying out forensic investigations and house to house enquiries."

Retired mental health nurse Ray Langford, 79, has lived in his house in the road for 47 years. He said: "It's a nice community around here and it's not the kind of thing you would expect."

Two police vans were parked up outside an address in Hillside Road yesterday afternoon, while forensic teams could be seen going in and out of the property. Uniformed officers were stationed outside, while groups of residents stood in the street watching events unfold.
