Staff and volunteers at Haden Hill House Museum are gearing up to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, and VE Day six years later, with a Fabulous 40s event.

The celebration event is on Bank Holiday Monday, 6 May. There'll be live music as well as costumed characters and historic vehicles from the Forever 40s historical interpretation group, soldiers and weapons demonstrations plus a display of uniforms, memorabilia, photos and artefacts. Jane Hanney-Martin, Sandwell Council's museum services manager, said:

"Visitors can enjoy some uplifting live music with The Steve King Big Band which will really get your toes tapping and your feet jitter-bugging.

"Come along, bring a picnic and a picnic blanket and enjoy the music and the entertainment. You could even come dressed up yourself. This should be a fantastic community event with loads to see, do, learn and enjoy."

For younger visitors, there'll be traditional entertainment with Punch and Judy shows, crafts and trails, and face painting and there'll also be stalls selling plants, jewellery and charity items. The tearoom will also be available for light refreshments courtesy of the Friends of Haden Hill estate. Alison Hyatt, visitor services officer, added:

"Our fantastic volunteers will also be holding a small street party and encouraging visitors to learn about rationing and food during wartime. 

"Children may be horrified at how few sweets children their age would have had during wartime rationing, and you can also have a go at our 'make do and mend' sessions."
