Walsall households will be asked to recycle food waste soon as the council presses on with plans to establish weekly food waste collections.

The change requires ‘significant additional funding’ and is set to be in place by 2026. The initiative aims to cut the amount of waste ending up in landfill, cut emissions and use food waste to produce renewable energy. 

Under government legislation, all councils must introduce food waste collections in 2026. Preparations are already underway for the impending changes, and Walsall Council has promised to deliver ‘accessible and convenient’ services.

Councillor Kerry Murphy, portfolio holder for street pride at Walsall Council, is delivering an update on the service at the next full council meeting. 

Councillor Murphy said: “The success of our services is driven by our dedicated staff and partners, who I can’t thank enough. 

“I’d also like to say thank you to our local volunteers and community groups, whose invaluable efforts support council services and make Walsall a better place.” 

The meeting is due to take place on February 26, at 6pm.
