Dudley Council chiefs are prepared for the coming winter period, with more than 2,500 tonnes of salt now stocked ready for icy conditions.
The local authority, which has a fleet of eight gritters that are used to treat more than 650 kilometres of the main road network, has recently confirmed that it will be updating its gritter fleet next winter.
The new vehicles, which will come into effect for winter 2026, will offer automated spreaders, route optimisation and GPS tracking systems to help make operations more efficient and consistent.
It is expected that the vehicles will help to reduce emissions from the service while preventing over or under gritting of the network.
There are also more than 650 grit bins across the borough for residents to use on side streets during inclement weather.
Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said: “We have a team of 65 people in the winter gritting team who do an amazing job working around the clock to monitor conditions and treat the highways during the coldest periods of the year.
“We have tonnes of grit stocked ready and will continue to monitor this as we move through the winter. We are also working towards procuring replacement gritting vehicles, which we hope to be able to use from next winter to further improve the service we provide."
All the latest details about council services and winter gritting are on Dudley Council’s Weather Watch webpage.
People who live in the borough can report issues via MyDudley and are invited to sign up to Weather Watch bulletins for service and highways updates.
