REVIEW: The Wedding Singer at The Rose Theatre

The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.

Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer's sparkling new score does for the '80s what Hairspray did for the '60s. Just say yes to the most romantic musical in 20 years.

It's 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart is New Jersey's favourite wedding singer. He's the life of the party, until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar.

Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever.

Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Society set up shop in the Rose Theatre in Kidderminster for their excellent depiction of Chad Beguelin and Tim Herlihy’s book - turned into one of Adam Sandlers funniest comedies.

The stage is simple yet effective, taking you through multiple scenes, ever occupied by the brilliant house band. Songs aplenty, the cast really did a good job belting out the soundtrack and lacing plenty of comedy throughout.

I must draw attention to the exceptional performances by Josh Dibble (Robbie), Reece Jones (Sammy) and Tom Paine (George) who have this innate bond and are able to bounce off each other in such a creatively comical way ensuring this show is a laugh a minute. Special mention also goes to Emily Hamer (Julia) as well as Melanie Jones (Rosie) for outstanding character portrayals truly engrossing you in the story from start to end.

Kidderminster Operatic and Dramatic Societies rendition of The Wedding Singer is local theatre at its best - combining talent and ability with a family mentality that’s palpable on stage from the moment the curtain rises.

Bringing a healthy dose of camp and retro nostalgia, the production plays at the Rose Theatre until the 18th March. For more information and tickets, visit rosetheatre.co.uk
