Long-running shows often risk becoming tired, feeling more like routine performances designed to satisfy fans rather than passionate productions. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth for the current UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show.
Since its premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in 1973, Richard O’Brien’s cult classic has cemented itself as the world’s most iconic rock ‘n’ roll musical.
With performances in over 30 countries, spanning every continent, and translations into more than 20 languages, its global influence is undeniable.
A lively tribute to the sci-fi and horror B-movies of the 1940s through to the 1970s, the musical follows a newly engaged couple who find themselves stranded in a storm, only to stumble upon the eerie mansion of an eccentric transvestite scientist.
There, they witness his latest experiment—Rocky Horror, a man-made, physically flawless specimen complete with golden hair, a tan and a tight pair of leopard print briefs.
From the moment the curtain rises, the show bursts with energy, confidence, and precision. With an inventive set and a dazzling cast, it’s an experience that’s impossible to resist. Whether you embrace the full costume experience and dust off your fishnets and stilettos, or prefer to sit back and enjoy the spectacle, you’ll time warp away completely converted!
Connor Carson (Footloose) stars as Brad and delivers the part exceptionally. His take on the role exhibits his flexibility as an actor and he excels in playing the role beautifully throughout the show. Lauren Chia (Frozen) steps into the shoes of Janet, and boy does she fill them, and then some! Such a phenomenal vocalist; she really brought a fresh of breath air and excelled in this casting.
A quick mention goes to the quick witted and fast tongued Jackie Clune, giving as good as she gets when the audience takes no shame at bellowing the usual heckles. She had the audience in stitches on more than one occasion!
However, the absolute STAR of this show has to be Adam Strong. Never has a man looked better in suspenders, corset, high heels, red lipstick and a pair of pink marigolds! Not only did he truly perfect the vocals, he brought in a new take on Frank and was phenomenal and flamboyant in doing so; acclaimed on several occasions by the prolonged standing ovations from the audience.
The Rocky Horror Show is not for the faint-hearted, and every cast faces a challenge when taking on this theatrical giant. However, if you’re looking for a good laugh and a lively night out, this cast pulls it off with electrifying success.
