REVIEW: Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of!) at The Rep

Direct from its triumph in the West End, where it won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy, Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of) is a unique and audacious retelling of Jane Austen’s most iconic love story.

Men, money and microphones will be fought over in this irreverent but affectionate adaptation where the stakes couldn’t be higher when it comes to romance.

With a simple set and a cast of just five, this production is a fast-paced, slick machine with a company made up of of absolute gem's who play numerous parts with some (often incredibly fast) costume changes! On top of that, the inclusion of a soundtrack (you heard me right!) of some beautifully crowbarred in jukebox classics made for a night where the audience often cried with laughter.

The show pokes fun at the period pieces, like Austen's original novel, and suggests that the servants often don't get high enough billing for the part they play in those sorts of story.

What follows is just over two hours of squeezing every drop of comedy from one of the worlds best-loved plays. Austen didn't include much alcohol, swearing and sarcasm in her stories, but this piece - beautifully constructed by Isobel McArthur - does just that and in a tremendous way too.

Quite often, you can walk out of a theatre thinking something was 99% there...but there was always the extra 1% that was missed. For once, I think that problem was solved - Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of) is a piece which miraculously manages to land every punch line and revel in every belly laugh.

That's in no small part thanks to a quintet of undeniable comedy talent; our five leading ladies revel in a fast-paced, word-heavy riot of fun on stage and that enthusiasm passes over to the audience who were on their feet within seconds of the stage fading to black at the end of the show.

The level of applause and adoration seemed to take the cast by surprise - but it's safe to say to was very much deserved.

Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of) plays at Birmingham Rep until Saturday 22nd April. For more information, or to get your tickets, head to birmingham-rep.co.uk.
