REVIEW: Death Drop Back In The Habit at The Alexandra

It's not often you leave a theatre dumbfounded, jaw on the floor and brain whirring - but the new production of Death Drop at The Alexandra is the perfect mix of camp, funny, self depreciating brilliance.

Whether drag is your thing, or if this is your first time dabbling with the genre, the cast certainly bring their own brand of hilarity to the stage. With a style reminiscent of The Play That Goes Wrong, our performers this evening were nothing short of beautifully rehearsed and unanimously skilled.

The story is straightforward - a gaggle of fierce Nuns are confined to their Convent. But their peace and tranquillity is shattered by a serial slayer slashing their way through the sisters.

With the help of an unexpected visitor from the Vatican, can Mother Superior and the Sisters of St Babs save their convent, save souls, and save themselves?

Lets make no bones about it - this show is built to shock. It’s vulgar, sexualised and in parts just down right rude…but the audience lapped up every second and rightly so. From the moment the curtain rose the cast had everyone on their side. Death Drop is two hours of pure joy that had us crying with laughter, reeling from innuendo and applauding the talents of a small but perfectly formed cast.

What also works so well is the unexpected. You’re lulled into a false sense of security with your mind telling you the direction you expect to go before you’re genuinely shocked at ‘certain’ scenes with the auditorium letting out an audible gasp as they fell back into their chairs.

This show is a feast for all of the senses, including some you didn’t know you had, and will ensure you leave the theatre smiling.

Death Drop plays at The Alexandra until Saturday 18th March. For more information or to get your tickets, head to atgtickets.com/birmingham.
